DSTV INCREASES ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTIONS

Two days ago it was confirmed that Multi-choice, the Naspens owned pay TV service would be effecting a price increase on its DSTV bouquets.

Prices to be effective from 1 April 2015 were announced with US $1 increases for the three lowest priced packages ( access, family, compact) $4 increases for Compact plus and Premium and a $5 increase for HD, PVR and premium. Extra view Access fee has also been increased by $1.

Multi-choice has always justified these annual price increases by citing rising operation costs, challenges with inflation and acquiring content etc.

Personally l think it’s just a game of plain old monopoly. With the Wiztech and Philibao decoders no longer an option and a ‘dead’ local broadcaster, Multi-choice is the only player that has firmly established itself as the consistent provider of TV entertainment.

It’s even more apparent if you are a cricket fan and you want to watch the ICC World Cup matches from the comfort of our homes. It’s not that wide a choice really, just so much more DSTV or nothing at all.

  1. its a matter of one paying for the utility he derives from watching dstv. They not only a monopoly but a unique one in that they offer quality service as opposed to the norm. to me the increases are justified.
